Leeds based arts collective, raisetheroof, returns to Leeds West Indian Centre with a ‘Wonkaland’ themed indoor festival on Friday the 9th of October, at Leeds West Indian Centre, as an after-party to the annual Leeds Light Night celebrations. The collective are set to inject the event, already critically acclaimed by the press, with fresh inspiration from the summer festival circuit. “The aim is to mobilise the community and push the boundaries of the live music experience”, commented organiser Roxanne. “Raisetheroof is just a big group of friends who enjoy being creative, but the end result is always something really special”. The theme, inspired by Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will convert the main room into a paradise for the sweet-toothed, with live bands and DJ’s entertaining visitors through the enormous 40k High Pressure Soundsystem. Ethereal stiltwalkers, burlesque dancers, trapeze acts and performance artists are all set to interpret the theme in diverse ways. You may even spot an oompa loompa if you’re lucky.

Headingley Arts & Crafts Fair May '09 |
| | Tucked away in the back room of a church, trinkets and treats expressing everything from crafting to ease the mind, showing off style to shift stock to the persistent and unprejudiced documenting of urban life passed an afternoon of my Saturday this week.
Having spotted a poster advertising ‘Headingley Arts and Crafts fair 10am-4pm, 9th May, Headingley Methodist Church’ earlier in the week, I couldn’t resist a visit.
You’ll appreciate this is all in the name of you, the lovely mill members and most certainly not in the name of surviving on a creatives’ wage, as I couldn’t resist a purchase or two OK three. My intention: to find out how these fairs come about and whether as a creative being you can not only make a few pennies out of it but in turn raise your profile and then divulge the information to you good people.

Fairtrade for life not just a fortnight |
| Leeds City Council Press Release
Fairtrade Fortnight might have come to an end for 2009 but the fair trade ethic continues all year round in Leeds.
Leeds City Council has supported the principle of Fairtrade for a long time and in 2003 councillors agreed to ‘note the need to improve the economic and social conditions of Third World workers and farmers working for poverty wages in incredibly poor conditions’.
Since then, much has happened. The council has gone completely Fairtrade and now only serves Fairtrade drinks in its buildings, including tea rooms at Tropical World, Golden Acre Park, Temple Newsam, and Lotherton Hall. Vending machines in leisure centres across the city also include a Fairtrade option as well.
In March 2004, Leeds was given ‘Fairtrade City’ status which was only achieved after a long campaign involving the support of many residents and organisations.

Since that first batch the sticker has been reprinted yearly and distributed widely, which has led to it being featured in both ‘London Street Art 2’ and 'Stickers! The First International Sticker Awards'
