EVOLUTION FESTIVAL THIS WEEK!

Annual Leeds based festival of international experimental film, video, technology and sound art arrives in venues across Leeds this week – screenings, events, talks and exhibitions.

SCREENINGS

LUX the agency for artists’ moving image based in London which holds the largest collection of artists’ film and video in Europe. We're screening two programmes showcasing an exciting and diverse range of work being made by contemporary British-based artists from the last two years.

Programme One - Thursday 14th, 6.30pm

Programme Two - Wednesday 13th, 8.30-pm & Saturday 16th, 6pm
Hyde Park Picture House

THE PROJECTION GALLERY is a London based artists’ media collection of fine artists in film and video, including a 2009 Jerwood Drawing Prize nominee. We are screening two programmes from their collection.

SUKI CHAN Northern Art Prize nominee (2008) will be showing her latest work Interval II at the Pavilion Gallery. Her video amplifies the melancholic atmosphere of the image with a film that conjures a poignant mood of transience, migrations, time’s passing and life passing away.

GEORGE BARBER a retrospective - pioneer of British video art once described in Art Monthly as “The Henry Ford of independent video” including works Tilt (1983), Absence of Satan (1985), Arts Council GB Scratch (1988), The Venetian Ghost (1988), 1001 Colours Andy Never Thought Of (1989), I was Once Involved in a Shit Show (2003) and more.

Saturday 16th, 4.00pm - Hyde Park Picture House

BARBEL NEUBAUER is one of Europe’s leading artists in animation and experimental film. Her practice spans the handmade techniques of painting and scratching directly onto celluloid through to 3D digital abstract animation.

Thursday 14th, 6.00pm - Hyde Park Picture House

LILY MARKIEWICZ artist / curator shows a collection of artists’ short films around the theme of the Journey, offering different interpretations, narratives and contexts. (Lily will also be delivering an artist talk on Thursday 6.30pm at the Burton Gallery, Leeds University).

Lee Gamble - To perform at AVOID

AVOID an evening of sound art and computer music exploring the extremes of synthesis, abstraction and transformation, curated by Leeds-based sound artist Joe Gilmore. Performances include Mark Fell (UK), Lee Gamble (UK), Marinos Koutsomichalis (GK), Theo Burt (UK) and DJs M+C, Rian Treanor and Ed Martin.

Saturday 16th, 7pm - 1am - Project Space, Patrick St Studios (ESA)

BASE an associated artists’ group from Huddersfield present an evening of show-and-tell with their cross-disciplinary, multi-platform work, which has created original and effective combinations of science, film, mobile phones, realworld games, RFID, Bluetooth, performance, theatre, literature, new media technologies, interactive architecture, community and public art.

MEDIA ART CURATORS PANEL EVENT Chaired by Deborah Chan from the North West Media Arts Network, with Layla Bloom curator at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery, Kwong Lee director / curator at Castlefield Gallery Manchester, Moira Innes director / curator at Leeds Met Gallery, Bill Howard the director of the London based artists group The Projection Gallery and video artist Sheena MacRae.
