Soul Food: Family and community in African-American Cinema Evening Course, Thursdays 17 September (7 Weeks) Time 6.30 – 8.30pm Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing (1989) was one of the first Black films to gain critical acclaim and mainstream audience attention for a ‘serious’ attempt to represent African-American culture. But Lee’s often controversial approach is not the only source of filmic reflections on African-American culture. This class will explore his work (see also the Bite the Mango Weekend) alongside that of very different Black filmmakers with full screenings of To Sleep With Anger (dir. Charles Burnett 1991) and Eve’s Bayou (dir. Kasi Lemmons 1998). £60, 45 concessions. The course will be delivered by Joe Hepworth, Screenwriter and Visiting Lecturer at the Northern Film School. £40, £30 concessions for 2 day course. Includes refreshments. Screenwriting for short film: Evening course, Tuesdays 22 Sept – 1 Dec (10 weeks) Time 6:00 – 9:00pm This class will provide the chance to develop your short film script from concept through to first draft. There will be regular screenings and discussions of short films to help understand the genre, and the opportunity to expand on the basic screenwriting principles covered in the introductory sessions. Delivered by Joe Hepworth, Screenwriter and Visiting Lecturer at the Northern Film School.
